When you're going out of your way for your employer, at the cost of your own time and energy, it's important to take a look and really think about why you're doing this… If you've been going above and beyond for an extended period of time with no commendation, appreciation, or acknowledgment of any sort, you're just setting yourself up for failure. For one thing, that extra work you're doing and the energy you're using is only going toward setting a higher benchmark for your performance, and your employer is only going to expect you to meet that baseline in the future. Further, expending this extra energy and spending this extra time at work is going to lead you to burn out
Of course, you may also find that instead of recognition or acknowledgment of your willingness to go above and beyond for the business, you get reprimanded instead by some middle manager who is only seeking to satisfy a single metric and not looking at all at the bigger picture.
That's what happened to this worker when they were pulled up for taking their lunches too late in order to better suit their workflow. Their boss insisted, classically, that "policy was policy" and wouldn't listen to any sort of reason.
Read on for what happened next in u/stress8all's story of malicious compliance that they shared with the Reddit community of the same name.
Next, check out this worker who was fired for harassment and used the job as a reference anyways.
