My kid is refusing to do more work without a pay raise and feels they will be fired tomorrow. I don't know what to advise them.

I want to keep this somewhat anonymous so I'm going to refer to my kid, who is mid 30's and works for a large healthcare org in the western US. They have worked for this org for several years, WFH, valuable employee.

Most of the people on their team have quit or been fired, unclear about which. Rather than hire replacements, they have just kept piling additional work onto my kid. The stress this has caused

them is negatively impacting their mental and physical health to the point I'm becoming desperately worried about them. They just told me that they've been refusing any more

additional work until the pay goes up and they are afraid they are going to be fired tomorrow. They called out today. They do not call out excessively.
  • 07
If they do fire my kid, do they have any recourse in getting unemployment? Can they be refused UI because they were fired for not doing double or triple the amount of work they were hired to do?
  • 08
Do you have any advice for me to pass on to them? I'm at a complete loss.

Update: When they logged in this morning they'd been locked out of work email. Then the supervisor called to tell them they are on unpaid leave while HR investigates the emails my kid sent for insubordination.

Update 2: They fired my kiddo. Fortunately they forwarded the email they got from management stating they are increasing the workload with no change in pay. They will be filing for UI and appealing if they are denied. Thanks for all the good advice.

Hoopy223 2 days ago I would tell him that 1) standing up for yourself is good and 2) getting fired sks but it's not the end of the world. No idea on unemployment in that case sorry.

CountryMouse359 · 2 days ago The thing is, making it all hinge on a pay raise doesn't seem like the call as an impossible workload is still impossible, the pay raise just masks the pain for a day or so. What they need is a pay raise and to reduce the workload to a manageable level.

When my employer gives me too much work, I just respond with "I'm already doing X,Y and Z which will take me until the end of the week. Do you wish me to do task W first? It will delay X, Y and Z by 3 days"

Aern 2 days ago • A few things. First, tell your child you are proud of them and they are doing the right thing by standing up for themselves. They may know that already, but it needs to be said anyway.
  • 16
Next, they need to be looking for new jobs immediately. Unless they can afford to not work for an extended amount of time, looking for a new job now is imperative.
  • 17
Lastly, if your child is fired make sure they do not indicate they are resigning or that they sign anything saying they quit or resign. Many companies try to bully employees into signing
  • 18
away their right to UI by threatening a bad reference or bad standing with the company. This is predatory and is not going to benefit your child.
  • 19
Sadly, many of these situations do not get better. Even if they allow your child to stay, the pressure and toxicity will continue to grow. Time to find a new opportunity and likely a rather large pay increase as well.

Candid Speaker705 2 days ago Tell your kid to do 8 hours of work and go home. It doesn't matter if the duties used to be someone elses. 8 hours is 8 hours of work. He doesnt need to hurry with the tasks but work at a moderate pace

BibiQuick 2 days ago Sounds like they cannot afford to lose your kid. Where I am you only get UI if fired. What's most important is for your kid to take care of themselves.
