The Gaming Industry

The gaming industry is the most profitable entertainment sector in the world, generating nearly $190 billion a year. That’s significantly more than either the film box office (~$30B) or the recorded music industry (~$29B). Since video games are sold as single units, they earn a lot more money than film and music pieces combined. Minecraft, Fortnite, and GTA V are just a few examples of massive hits that reached huge global audiences through PC, console and mobile gaming. It is no secret that this is where the money is at.

Gamers are a serious and highly devoted audience that invests wholeheartedly in this passion. Some play as a beloved hobby, exploring different worlds as a way to unwind after a long day at work. While other gamers, through live-streaming and reviewers, have formed successful careers thanks to these intricate crafts. However, you don’t have to be a devoted gamer to realize that the highest-selling hits are not the best the gaming industry has to offer. Minecraft and even the fifth GTA might be the most popular games in the world, but as fun as they may be, they are just another drop in the ocean. Though some gamers explore new video games from corporate to indie-made, the general audience is still far from understanding just how eye-opening some of these less-popular games can be.

In recent years, even Hollywood has come to realize just how much the gaming industry has to offer. Since the film and TV industries have been struggling to come up with original content to supply to their audiences, many studios have turned to the gaming industry in search of content to bring to life. Naughty Dog’s The Last of Us has been adapted by HBO into a hit series, the Minecraft movie was a surprising success, a second season of Fallout is set to release next month, and a live-action Sims movie is in the making. And these are just a few of the hits in the video games’ arsenal.

So why is it that the anticipation for GTA 6 has overthrown it all?

What We Got Before GTA 6

So far in the 12 years we have been waiting for Grand Theft Auto VI, we have had plenty of time to do what the internet does best: Create memes. The biggest meme surrounding GTA 6 and its delayed release is the “We got [x] before we got GTA 6, which provides the perfect explanation of how long we’ve actually been waiting for this one game. Some even say that this meme has gotten old, which essentially means that we got tired of the "we got [x] before gt6" meme before we got GTA 6. Ironic, isn’t it?

Through this GTA 6 hype, it’s clear that it is not just devoted gamers who are waiting for this game. The GTA series has always been popular, even among those who don’t consider themselves gamers. A general audience who is stuck in the waiting loop of a game that keeps getting further and further away. Yet, even if they don’t care about gaming that much, if they only ever enjoyed GTA, they should be able to find themselves in at least one other game that is currently available to play and enjoy. What is stopping anyone from trying these out?

If you keep waiting for GTA 6, you’re going to get stuck. You need to open your eyes to more of this wonderful industry that has so much to offer. If you support indie video game makers who put their hearts and souls into their creations, you can find yourselves exploring new unimaginable worlds.

It’s not that GTA 6 won’t be great; it probably will be. It’s hard to tell if these never-ending delays are setting the audience up for disappointment, since the hype just keeps building up, or if they are actually an indication of how flawless the game will be once it hits the market. Either way, putting all our expectations into one delayed mega-title doesn’t just set us up to be disappointed or amazed, it also makes us miss out on everything else the gaming world has to offer. So, instead of worshipping a game we can’t play yet, let’s explore the ones we can. You can even tune in to The Game Awards next month and get inspired by some of the best games of 2025. Who knows? You might find something there that you will like much more than whatever GTA 6 has in store.
