Anteaters are fascinating, really. They're toothless mammals with an incredible appetite - a giant anteater consumes up to 35,000 ants and termites daily. They only feed on a single mound for about a minute before moving on, which prevents them from destroying the colony and allows their food source to replenish. And they do all that with a tongue of steel - An anteater's tongue can grow up to two feet long and is coated in sticky, glue-like saliva. They can flick their tongues in and out up to 150 times per minute to scoop up ants. Their eyesight is notoriously poor, but they make up for it with a sense of smell up to 40 times stronger than ours.

And now, for a close neighbor. While the kiwi bird isn't Australian, we thought it deserves an honorable mention. This fluffy, flightless bird is from New Zealand, and it fits just as well as any “weird Aussie animal”.
