IT employee gets reported for stealing company laptops by coworker, only for HR to discover everything was fully approved: 'HR already had all the paperwork before you even finished your report'

  • Coworkers review workplace information together before making decisions about a developing office situation.
  • I (28M) work in IT for a mid sized company and I have been there for almost five years and part of my job is handling hardware replacements. That means I'm constantly walking around the office with laptops, monitors, keyboards whatever needs to be repaired or swapped.
  • About three months ago we hired a new employee, she wasn't on my team but we met a few times. We weren't friends or anything just the usual good morning when we pass each other.
  • Last week I was packing up two new laptops and putting them in my backpack before heading out. It probably looked a little weird if you didn't know what I was doing but I had paperwork for both of them. I was taking them to one of our remote offices because I was scheduled to work there the next morning.
  • Apparently she saw me and came to her own conclusion. The next day my manager messaged me asking if I could stop by HR for a few minutes. I figured it was about something I forgot to complete or fix but No
  • HR asked if I had taken company equipment home without permission and I was confused for about five seconds until they explained that someone had reported me for stealing laptops and I actually laughed because I knew exactly what they were talking about.
  • I pulled up the work order on my laptop and showed them the approval email from my manager, the asset numbers and even the invite for the site visit. HR apologized almost immediately and said they just had to follow up because someone had sounded very confident when they made the report, I honestly didn't think much of it after that.
  • Then later that afternoon the same coworker walked over to my desk with this smug look on her face and asked, “So….. did they catch you?” I just looked at her for a second before I started laughing.
  • Not because I wanted to embarrass her but because she had convinced herself she would exposed some huge theft or something and I told her that those laptops were assigned to me. HR already had all the paperwork before you even finished your report and she went completely quiet.
  • A couple of people nearby had heard the conversation and one of my teammates couldn't stop laughing either which she left without saying anything, now she is upset because she says I made her look stupid in front of everyone. A few coworkers think I should have just accepted that she was trying to do the right thing but I don't really agree.
  • If she had asked me one question instead of immediately reporting me I could have explained everything to her but instead she assumed the worst, filed a complaint and then walked over expecting to watch me get fired. I don't think me or other people laughing was that unreasonable considering the situation but now I'm getting mixed opinions around the office. AITA?
  • IT employee handles computer hardware and company equipment as part of a routine technology support task.
  • nomad_117 NTA. She couldn't have figured out that OP was in the clear when they were allowed to go back to work and they clearly weren't upset?
  • JosKarith Nta. She came for you and it backfired. The consequences of that are on her
  • Classic-Wafer-7838 NTA. She made herself look silly - not even by making the report, we could assume that was well intentioned, but by coming to gloat about it. I also love the idea that she thinks you might have got caught stealing two laptops and still have a job and be sat at your desk later in the day like nothing had happened.
  • Pawn_of_the_Void I mean point out that she tried to embarrass you, the reason this happened in front of coworkers is she tried to ask her question in front of them. NTA
  • JaxSuzy NTA. She did it to herself!
  • IT professionals collaborate on technical systems and equipment management in a modern office environment.
  • bountiful_garden Nya. She made herself look st*pid
  • SpeedBlitzX NTA She really thought she had something there, i'm a little surprised she didn't get a warning from HR after filing a false report. If she doesn't want to look that way maybe she should stop doing such things.
  • Narniana I would pass judgement but I can barely stop laughing myself NTA
  • viralplant NTA, her comment to you about being 'caught' means she thinks she thinks quite highly of herself and deserves what comes her way.
  • armedwithjello NTA. Nobody would have known it was her if she hadn't gone up to you acting all proud of herself. Yeah, she could have asked you first, but even if she was right you were stealing equipment (not the conclusion I would have come to) it still would have been inappropriate for her to do that. If you had been found to be stealing, you probably would have been perp-walked right out of the office right away. It sounds like she just isn't that smart.
