How Ridiculous Can High Fashion Be: TikToker Makes a Good Point, While Looking Totally Silly

We’ve all seen Devil Wears Prada and Project Runway, but most people don’t get to experience the fashion world first hand, except through the annual, shameful watch-parties of the Victoria Secret fashion show. Of course, standard “fashion” practices such as a quick errand at Target or a group hang-out at the mall are typical, but casual shopping and regular clothing feature the fashion genius that Miranda Priestly, reminds us comes from high fashion.

In fact, the t-shirt you’re wearing right now is inspired by high fashion choices, trends, and decisions, trickled down from the stars of fashion week into the tragic discount bins that you fished it out from.

Since the glamor of the fashion world is largely out of reach, or beyond interest, for the average citizen, DangMattSmith, a TikToker and avid YouTuber, made a satirical video commenting on this strange and alien world. Sure, our t-shirts are inspired by high fashion, but in all actuality, fashion, to a certain degree, becomes art.

In other words, it gets weird.

Fashion shows be like:

Much like the art industry, the fashion world takes regular things to the extreme, accentuating colors, textures, prints, fits, and pairings for the sake of a statement or to increase shock value. @DangMattSmith points out the lengths that designers and runway walkers will go to stand out. With pumping house music, serious faces, and an uber-confident, dead-eyed walk that would make any passerby step to the side, runway shows can sometimes be hilarious.

Sure, the intent is to be serious and graceful, but how can we take a person seriously when they’re wearing a bedazzled straight jacket or a floor length, monster-sized puffer coat. In his video, Matt Smith does his own version of a fashion show with household items: a barstool, the kitchen trash can, a mannequin head, and, naturally, a horse mask.

In actuality, he’s not that far off from the real thing, which is why it’s even more hilarious. I guess it’s only natural that regular people laugh at what we do not understand. Maybe there’s something more to fashion that we’re missing, something we need to dive deeper into. We should try to read between the lines of our worn out t-shirts and find the thread of high fashion that’s buried beneath the screen print. Underneath our cotton blends and high-waisted jeans is a story not yet told, probably featuring a 6ft tall, slender, alien-like beauty with ankles of steel and the best poker face in the world.
