Weekly Internet Roundup: Ariana DeBose is a Theater Kid, Venus De Milo is an Insta Thot, and a Kid Has Christ For Arms

Congratulations, you've almost made it to the end of another grueling Monday to Friday. This calls for a celebration. Seeing as you're here, there's no better way to do that than taking a sideways look at some of the biggest things to have captured the internet's attention this week. For a pleasant change, we have an edition of the roundup that has more stupid memes than stupid discourse. Without further ado, here they are.

The Lin-Manuel Miranda Effect

Another week in Q1 2023, another godforsaken award show. Social media veterans know this can mean only one thing. It's time for a celebrity to do something unbelievable for us all to discuss or make memes out of for the next several days to months. Last year's Oscars contained the legendary Will Smith/Chris Rock slap, and the Grammys earlier this month had Ben Affleck looking as pained as only Ben Affleck can.

Basically, the BAFTAs had some stiff competition when it came to giving the people what they wanted. So, they brought out the most noxious weapon of all: theater kid cringe.

The performance of Ariana DeBose prompted such a reaction on Twitter that the former Hamilton actress ended up temporarily deactivating, which was probably for the best. Viewers and successful women in the film industry collectively cringed as she sang the praises of her impressive contemporaries in a way that nobody wanted to hear. A special mention has to go to Angela Basset, who was condemned to peak millennial embarrassment as someone who “did the thing”. Lin-Manuel, you will pay for your crimes.

They Threw Beans On Him

The internet loves the perplexing world of Christian cinema. VeggieTales has long been a muse for demented meme makers, and you truly haven't lived until your TikTok algorithm has fed you wildly offensive clips from visionary evangelical filmmaker Donald James Parker. What with much of internet culture going directly against Christian values good and bad, making fun of pious content is a temptation hard to resist.

As a result, it's no surprise that Christ-For-Arms has attracted meme makers near and far. A fake VHS cover for the eponymous movie has been circulating on Facebook and Twitter since at least 2021, but has blossomed in popularity recently — in part thanks to the baffling bean attack plot point that it advertises. A sign of a great movie, if ever there was one.

Massive Bazongas. Makes U Think

The genre of We Live In A Society art is a breathtakingly stupid one. Still, it takes real talent to make something that demonstrates enough fake deep sentiment to power a thousand examples of cringey Facebook cartoons. It has to be said, Greg Lansky has this unfortunate talent.

The sculptor rose to success in the adult entertainment industry, but his new passion is making art that apparently mocks the very women who star in his videos. Algorithmic Beauty is a statue that represents “the relationship between pain and feeling loved in a world driven by AI algorithms”. This means that it is a naked lady with ample fake breasts taking a selfie.

Created in 2022, this modern day Venus De Milo has been panned on Twitter this week for everything from its apparently dim view of women, to using the wrong surgery scars. The day male artists stop doing variations on the Dennis Reynolds school of fashion design will be the day hell freezes over.

I Am Once Again Asking for You to Stop Filming Street TikToks

No matter what you think of Bernie Sanders, it can't be denied that the man makes a fine meme. This guy can't make a campaign video or wear some mittens without the Photoshoppers of the world finding a joke and running it into the ground.

With the 2020 election being a distant memory, Bernie hasn't drummed up that much new content recently. That all changed, though, when he had the misfortune of accidentally walking into the middle of a TikTok.

Naturally, he did not look best pleased at being confronted with the pair cavorting on the NYC sidewalk. This was much to the amusement of TikTokers and Twitter users alike. That's Joe Biden's America for you.

…And that's it for another few days. Time to take a breather, and give everyone time to generate some more mildly entertaining ridiculousness to summarize. I'm sure they won't find it too difficult. Until next time!
