Font - This happened a few years ago but it always makes me laugh. Malicious compliance mixed with extreme pettiness. Can I do that here? Idk. Here goes... My now ex gf and I bought a house together. She's extremely wealthy. Me, not even close.
  • 03
Font - Our agreement was that we would use her PLA (portfolio loan account) to purchase the house so we would technically be "all cash buyers" and no down payment was required. The house cost $700k.
  • 04
Font - Our contract only stated that I was entitled to 30% of the equity, and her 70%. It was absolutely fair. A couple years later we built an insanely expensive garage for about $215k because she refused to build a $50k, metal garage. She insisted on a wood framed garage. Ok. I acquiesced.
  • 05
Font - The garage was also put on the PLA but neither of us thought to amend our original contract. Then we had a nasty break-up. She said she would buy me out of the house which was fair because there was no way I was coming up with hundreds of thousands to buy her out.
  • 06
Font - She also agreed to buy me out of all the stuff we bought together like a hot tub ($7k) a massive, raised-bed garden ($5k) our stupidly expensive sleep number bed ($7.5k) electronic entry gate ($4k) etc, etc.... Ok great!
  • 07
Font - For all of the expensive things we bought, we spilt them 1/3 to 2/3. Why? I honestly thought my equity was 33.3%, not 30%, so we always split everything 1/3 to 2/3, down to the penny.
  • 08
Font - After going through our financial records I discovered I was actually paying 33.3% of our mortgage, not 30%. She paid the mortgage because the PLA was in her name and I trusted her to give me the correct numbers since, if you're not aware, PLA loans are almost always adjustable rate loans.
  • 09
Font - This was never an issue because it only ranged between about 1.5% and 2.3%, and I trusted her. She claimed it was "my choice" to pay extra, not that she was literally telling me the wrong information. Was this intentional on her part? I doubt it. She's just too wealthy to care about a thousand dollars here and there until it matters to her.
  • 10
Font - Cue malicious compliance... She refused to acknowledge the measly 3.3% extra I paid for everything even though I had undeniable proof. She just kept saying "ReAd tHe CoNtRaCt!”
  • 11
Font - I was pretty pi d off, given that she's extremely wealthy, and a few grand made no difference to her so I started doing some research. Oh boy, was she in for a surprise!
  • 12
Font - Since we never amended the contract to include the garage, it was considered a voluntary improvement on her part since "we" were paying for it with her PLA, and the law said I wasn't responsible for any of it.
  • 13
Font - The house appraised for $1.1 million and our loan balance was about $650k. This meant my 30% was $135k + the other stuff. If the garage was included in the contract my 30% would have only been $70,500, but it wasn't.
  • 14
Font - Now, if she simply acknowledged my extra 3.3%, my equity would have been $148,500 - $70,950 (garage) = $77,550 buy out. I originally offered $80k and I would move out, but no, she wouldn't agree because of the garage. Since she refused to acknowledge the extra 3.3%, I refused to acknowledge the garage.
  • 15
Font - I also threatened to force the sale of the house if she didn't honor tHe CoNtRaCt because the law was 100% on my side. It was a completely empty threat but she didn't know that.
  • 16
Font - She had absolutely no interest in selling because her job was amazing, didn't allow for remote work and it would be an "inconvenience" for her to sell the house. Ok. Fi <you. Now you're gonna pay me even more.
  • 17
Font - She got super pi d off and hired a lawyer that cost her who knows how much and I guarantee they told her "He's right. You have no leverage. Sell the house and/or pay him."
  • 18
Font - After she met with her lawyer she offered me $50k. LMFAO! Nope. How about fi k you, pay me? This whole thing painstakingly dragged on for about 6 months and during that time I refused to pay my part of the mortgage or any of the bills since everything was in her name and there was nothing she could do about it.
  • 19
Font - Even if I had, she would have owed me more anyway. Plus, she refused to provide the actual payment receipts, claiming it would be "too expensive and complicated to separate everything". All I had was our shared excel spreadsheets that also proved she wasn't paying at least $1,000/month of our loan! No clue what she did with that money.
  • 20
Font - We ended up settling for $140k instead of $77,500 because I simply honored our contract. Now, for a bit of undeniable pettiness on my part for her upending my life, wasting my time, her blatantly lying about everything, and for her trying to intimidate me with her lawyer like I couldn't google this så t for free...
  • 21
Font - Our HVAC, watering system, and entry gate were all electronically controlled by different apps. I'd crank the heat all day when she was at work, turned the water on all night, opened/closed the gate all day long because I knew she'd get
  • 22
Font - notifications about the gate and she'd spend hundreds/thousands of dollars calling out technicians. I also manually switched the solar panels off a couple of weeks before I moved out. Lol!
  • 23
Font - I still had access to our utility accounts and laughed every month watching her spend crazy amounts of money for over a year before she eventually sold the house.
  • 24
Font - She never figured out why her utilities sky rocketed after I moved out. Or maybe she did but she never did anything about it according to her utility bills. All she had to do was change the passwords but she never did.
  • 25
Font - Tldr: ex gf lied her a s off and refused to be reasonable and acknowledge my actual contribution to our home when she bought me out so it cost her an extra $62,500 + 6 months of mortgage payments + 6 months of bills + untold $$ because I'm a petty mf. All because I honored our contract as she demanded.

Font - Fluffy-Designer . 7 hr. ago The problem with people who yell "read the contract" without actually reading the contract is they're often not smart enough to get away with not reading the di n contract.

Font - SaveMyB edited 3 hr. ago OP 5 hr. ago. It was like 3 sentences. Her problem was thinking I was a stupid poor and I would just roll over and not spend an hour on google while rage-si king wd after she proved herself to be a liar.
  • 28
Font - I probably could have taken her to court for a lot more but it was exhausting and I never spent a dime while she spent, presumably, thousands just to find out she was wrong.
  • 29
Font - Edit: I literally begged her not to nickel and dime our relationship. Just be reasonable and offer me something reasonable. She wouldn't listen. Probably the consequences of being born rich and suing everyone in her way.
