Back in prehistoric days, when hunters and gatherers went out into the wilderness to get food and supplies for their village, anxiety was meant to alert primitive humans that there was danger approaching. If a tiger was stalking you and you had to get a burst of adrenaline to outrun it or outsmart it, that proved to be a pretty successful anxious flush. Now in 2023, we get that same there's-a-tiger-trying-to-eat-me feeling when we have to send a confrontational email. Our ancestors would be ashamed and incredibly confused.
Perhaps anxiety could be one of those evolutionary changes in humanity that we could do without. Like an appendix, an overactive fear response to regular things doesn't make you a better hunter... But it does make you have spicier dark humor!
