Font - TIFU by venting about my boss when I thought I was muted. S So my girlfriend and I work from home for different companies. I'm working from home every other week. This is an at home week. We were having our morning meeting over the internet. Voice only. There are 8 of us on the call including my manager and me. And the manager of our location was talking to each of us about things we're doing, things that need to be done, etc. When she got to me, we

Font - went over a few things, told me some things that needed to be done, I explained that I'm trying but other people in a neighboring department don't really help and make it very difficult for me to do what she was asking. She told me what she wanted and I said okay.

Font - I then muted my headset and started venting to my GF about the difficulty I was having that my manager seemed to gloss over. I was sort of mocking what she said to me because she made it seem like it was a simple thing to accomplish. Ending with an exasperated "What am I supposed to do" To which my manager replied, "hey we can all hear you, you might want to stop talking." After which I explained I was supposed to be muted, the red light was lit on my headset. I may have apologized, I don

Font - After the meeting I sent her a message apologizing and explained that I was just venting because I'm having a hard time with the job and don't know everything I'm supposed to and that expectations keep changing. Told her that I would appreciate if she could call me and we could talk about it because I'm having a real hard time concentrating on my job when I don't know if I'll still have it next week. But she's busy in conference calls for a while, so she won't be able to call me for a bit

Font - Good times. TL;DR Vented about my boss to my GF while on a conference call, thought I was muted, everyone heard me

Font - Update: boss lady didn't mention it during my daily check out. So I'm gonna cross my fingers that she doesn't fire me tomorrow because that's my Friday.

Font - Update #2: Was not fired yesterday which was my Friday. However I am applying for a different position in the same building where hopefully I'll be less miserable.

Font - OwlKnead Hey, maybe it will work out for the best. Maybe the manager will realize how short-sighted she was being and work it out with you. 546 Share bdash1990 OP I really doubt it. But thank you for the positivity.

Font - OwlKnead Honestly, it is part of a manager's job to make sure work can be conducted smoothly. If they are not willing to work with you to figure out what works, they aren't management material. May be able to bring that up the chain of command, if there are higher-ups in your company.

Font - [deleted] As a manager, I wish more people would be as open about their issues. It's hard to help people when you don't see the problem, which you can't all the time. Communication prevents resentment in a good team dynamic.

Font - ConvivialKat Ouch! Yeah, I hate to be negative, but I think this is not going to be beneficial to your career. I'm going to be frank and say that it's not just what you said while not muted, but the fact that you failed to confirm you were muted (or the call was over), before venting. Plus, and this is also important, your GF works for a different company, but she was very obviously right there and able to hear the meeting and participate in your venting. All not good things from an emplo

Font - oceanmemories. Acknowledging exactly this might be a saving roll, if needed. If OP can own this mistake and acknowledge the behaviors and failures on their part, it *could* create a better environment for the manager to own their own shortcomings in managing a project and/or team. There's a lot to chance, for sure.

Font - kixsaly Your manager needs to understand that. People say stuff they don't mean to when they get upset. I hope she will understand.

Font - nonyabees_ Dude, I can relate...something similar happened to me, except I was in another office from my boss and I said to a coworker " <boss name> doesn't know his a from his elbow". Turned around and guess who was there. My response "I said what I said, x, y, and z are why. I shouldn't have said it the way I did, but here we are". I thought I was gonna be so fired, but boss was happy for the honesty. Hope your situation turns out similarly. I literally about c___ped my pants though.

Font - [deleted] Understand your situation. I was on a conference call once when this woman admitted that she did not know the answer to an issue, but kept on talking, preventing anyone else from chiming in. I thought the phone was on mute and exclaimed, "Jesus Christ, she won't shut up!". Someone on the call said I was not on mute. I apologized. The woman that would not shut up apologized as well. But, a very embarrassing situation.

Font - irrelevanthumanhere. Everyone is justifying this. you shouldn't complain about your BOSS at a CONFERENCE even it is muted. I just hope ya don't get fired.

Font - Darrone Next time drop your voice a register and say "hey, this is your name, whoever was that just talking, we can all hear you!"

Font - IdkName37 If she's good leadership she'll take it with a grain of salt. I'm sure even in her position she has complaints she'd vent to those close to her. Hopefully you'll be pleasantly surprised. Hoping for the best for you
