'This is dystopian': Teacher gets reprimanded for 'liking' Snow Day social media announcement, gets accused of being excited to not work

There are some employers you just can't win with. It's not enough to do your job enthusiastically when you're there, you also have to perform total devotion to the art and science of working hard 24/7. When you're a teacher, I find that to be especially true. It's difficult to have any sort of public social media without parents, students, or administrators analyzing it and waiting for you to make a mistake. When I was in high school, me and my friends were experts at finding our teacher's social media accounts. Luckily, we just shared them among ourselves instead of tattling on teachers for any indiscretions they made online, but in hindsight, it might not have been the most respectful thing to do. One teacher found her social media behavior being criticized after she liked a post made by the school district. The reason? She was allegedly promoting snow days too enthusiastically.

    I'm at a loss for words. Last week, almost all of the districts in my area shut down for a day due to the threat of ice. As is common in the age of social media, these districts communicated these closures by posting on Facebook.

    I have several friends who work in a bigger district in our state and there has been chatter that not one, but at least 2 teachers were given letters of reprimand for "liking" the posts. You heard that right.... they literally hit the little thumbs up on something THEIR DISTRICT posted and were disciplined for it. Apparently, they shouldn't seem enthusiastic about schools closing for a "Snow Day" where parents/kids can see their reactions.

    Bumper 22276.6h Someone should use social media to post the letters of reprimand and the superintendent's email address. When we have weather coming in, our Earth Science teachers are posting Doppler radar maps and estimating the odds of a Snow Day, while the rest of us encouraging them. Nothing is fun anymore.     ksdanj. 6h Why are some districts hellbent on sucking every last bit of joy out of this profession? I'm pushing 60 and I still get as excited about a serendipitous snow day now as I did when I was a kid. Snow days are one of life's little happy surprises. 81 凸 Reply
