Tonight my dog reminded me exactly what GSDs were bred for

My 3.5 year old GSD/Pit mix is usually super indifferent to strangers. During walks he'll pass people without even turning his head, and he's always friendly with anyone I actually introduce him to. Zero people reactivity.
  • 04
Tonight though, I took him on a really late walk around the neighborhood and there was one woman walking alone on the opposite side of the street in the dark. He
  • 05
noticed her from pretty far away and immediately became extremely alert. Not aggressive at all, just intensely aware of her presence.
  • 06
As we passed, he would NOT let her out of his sight. He kept turning his head while walking, looking around parked cars and bushes to keep visual on her, and even kept looking back until she was completely out of view.
  • 07
He's done similar things before, but this time it really hit me how safe I feel having him with me at night.
  • 08
Needless to say, he got extra treats when we got home lol.

Anyone else experience this with their GSDs or mixes? | know shepherds are naturally protective, but actually seeing it happen in real life is kind of crazy. Proud of my boy.

Lady_Grim My Husky/GSD mix does the same! Totally friendly by day, protective and alert once night falls. It really makes me feel incredibly safe.

BloodEffective OP Glad to know I'm not alone, but can't even imagine the amount of hair you have to deal with Imaooo
  • 12
aquacrimefighter My husky/GSD is the same way! That goober is on alert and running patrol laps of the yard periodically when it gets dark. I just love him.
  • 13
Vergilly Same! It's kind of cool to hear so many others do this, too. He's usually just a sweet doofus, but boy if something seems threatening, he can get serious quick.

TonmaiTree Wow same with mine! He's around 7 months old and he loves spending his night patrolling outside(unless I turn on AC) and he only comes to my bedroom when it's morning >

ReactionClear4923 We have a GSD, and a Pyrenees mix. Both super sweet, but also get right into guard mode when needed. I feel at ease when my wife is out for walks with them alone

Spamaloper Our Shepsky is the same. Honestly, it's incredible (and frustrating sometimes, thank you for your Husky triggers).

We recently had some of those late-night solicitors come by our house and then to our neighbors. Suspect (we live around Los Angeles), and we made her day by letting her into the fenced-in yard and giving her permission to bark like h_l. GSD is a very scary bark. Aka - if you're going to come back and break in, you better be loaded. The one thing I don't worry about is anyone being out with my family or me with her.

Mindfulfan777 My babygirl is always protecting our home and family. When Dad isn't here, she is on EXTRA alert. I never feel afraid with my dogs.

    Trex_Arms_26 My biggest and older shepherd of my two is terrified of the wind, the hose, going into water that is too deep, thunder, and people; a genuinely anxious boy. But d....in he has never let me down when it matters most;
  • 23
when he and I were walking around downtown once, two shady men started following me (through and around the park). We kept them in our sights at all time, recognizing the potential threat but there was a considerable distance between me and them. When they started to close the gap,
  • 24
my shepherd was all of it, immediately putting himself between us, loud and in full protective mode; he did not move until they finally left. I would not trade him for the world

Casual Browser003 Several years ago one of my roommates left a window partially open on the first floor of my house. Around 3am someone walked up to the window, cut the screen with a knife, and crawled into my house. My GSD, Bear, alerted and met the intruder with a toothy welcome. My pup got a big steak for dinner the next day. RIP Bear

nunyaranunculus People either cross the street to avoid Karhu - or to meet him. Lol. My kids, teens, went for a walk late one night as they often do and they were gone for much longer than usual. I panicked. I live in a relatively safe city, but a city all the same so I leashed Karhu
  • 28
and brought him with me to go track down my kids. I'm glad I did because a creep came towards me on a poorly lit residential street and was clearly planning something.
  • 29
Karhu is pitch black so he didn't see him at first. Karhu stopped, positioned himself in front of me, dropped his head down predatorialy and the only thing that moved on him was his hackles. Creep was close enough to us at that point that I could see his
  • 30
expression when he finally noticed Karhu. He went from intent to shocked to horrified in seamless succession. He took off fast. I forget that Karhu is as big as he is and how lupine and dangerous he can look because he's just my derpy, fragile little teeny tiny baby puppy dog.

ilovemydogs I was at a rest stop in the middle of nowhere once. I parked, took my gsd puppy and other dog potty, then I decided to recline my seat and sleep for 20 mins. I woke up to my gsd growling with her paws on top of my reclined seat. I
  • 33
was tired and confused then she started barking loud. There was a man staring inside my window & watching me sleep. I really appreciated having her that night, she was still a young puppy. They're amazing, I never had to train her to protect.

HollyDolly_xxx I dont agree with the whole 'dogs are good judges of character' blah blah blah thing people say when a dog doesnt like someone but i certainly do pay more attention to my surroundings when my Buddy randomly stops and/or looks intently at a specific place and theres nothing that i can see or hear to explain why he did it.x
  • 35
Appropriate-Net1522 I'll give you the judge of character thing, you could very well be right about that. I don't think character has a scent. But dogs pick up on something. Anxiousness, anger, hostility...I can't say; I am not a dog. But, I 100 pay attention to my girl's reactions.

BelladonnaASMR My shepherd made a group of dr_nk dudes part like the red sea while i was walking to my hotel room one night. I felt so awesome and SAFE as a short woman. Love my big dog privilege.

Roux_My_Burgundy We got our first shepherd when I was a teen in the 90's. My dad re-married and moved in with a new family and we took the dog. My step mom wasn't used to big dogs and he told her 'you'll never have to worry about a stranger coming in the house again.'
  • 39
A few days later we came home from somewhere and there was a note (this was before cellphones when you'd leave notes in the kitchen) from my step-sister's friend 'hey ya'll. Dropped off Jenna's bathing suit. Love the new dog! He's super sweet. XD
  • 40
We got a big laugh out of it but Sheperds seem to know who does and does not belong.
  • 41
Inside_Warthog_7124 I have a GSD/lab mix, but her personality it's 80% GSD, she ignores humansunless she is introducedto, she is very patient with kids to the pointshe will let them pull her. tail, and she hates barking.

One day, we were downtown with another friend of mine (both petite women) and while we were getting in my car a homeless man tried to get into the backseat and my dog was NOT HAVING IT. She let out a growl that woke up h I bared her teeth and the guy ran away visibly scared.
