Landlord Sends Over the Most Red Flag Renters Lease Ever, TikToker Calls Them Out

We all know the market is absolutely BONKERS right now. Worse than it was during the Great Depression. Nobody is able to own a house, even though there are plenty to go around. And landlords are no longer people providing you a home, they are slumlords trying to extort you for all you got. Real estate is not a a beautiful chapter you visit in your life when you've become an adult with adult money ready to live your life independently—it's now a very stressful time, even if you're just looking for a place to rent.

Millennials have been complaining about it for a while and now the market has just seriously gone off the rails, so forget about owning a house. Sorry… TikTokers are constantly posting about ridiculous real estate situations all the time because now those kinds of story are a dime a dozen. Recently, however, the TikToker Nerys Bueller went viral on the app for calling out a lease she received that was riddled with the most red flags she's ever seen.

She had been searching for a while in Philadelphia because she was getting priced out of her one bedroom apartment. She found her dream place, applied and got approved. But when she looked at the lease… Well, she said if she hadn't read the fine print, she would've been totally screwed

  • The first red flag is a deductible for repairs and she would be unable to withhold rent due to maintenance not being done. “Not a huge deal, but it's a little weird,” she says.
  • The second red flag was when you give your “two month notice” before you want to vacate the apartment, they are allowed to just show up at anytime during that period with no notice. "It's not a deal breaker, but it's not good.
  • Then, thirdly, you can only have a guest stay over for 14 days every six months… So if you're dating someone, better pick your nights wisely. And parties? Forget about it, you're strictly not allowed more than 12 people over at a time.
  • You are completely in charge for the maintenance of all the appliances—the fridge, the stove, the AC, all of it. “So you have to pay to repair something that's not even yours.”
  • You're also in charge of cleaning the gutters for the entire house. There are other unites, so like… How do you work together on that?
  • You pay for any pest control needs that arrive. And this is in Philadelphia, a big city—there will be pest control needs.
  • “There was an entire ‘As-Is’ clause that was concerning…”
  • You have to replace the AC filters on your own dime. If you don't and it breaks down, you're responsible for the repairs.
  • Extension chords are prohibited?!?!
  • They say if there is mold for more than two weeks, it is not a reason for you to break your lease, even if you're getting sick. MOLD.
  • And the price list for damages is INSANE. The charge $50 for every hole a nail makes in the wall…

“It’s the East Coast landlord audacity for me. 🚩🚩🚩”

This landlord was not even trying to hide that they are a straight up slumlord. They are basically just raking in the rent money and having you sign away any duties they would have as a landlord. They're saying “gimme the money and you're own your own!” It's absolutely disgusting, and yet it's becoming a common occurrence more and more.

The TikToker was too in shock to rip them a new one, but she made sure to send a message to the agent who showed her the house saying how upsetting the fine print was. Viewers agree she was definitely too nice in her response. She thanked the agent for showing her the house and all her work, but that after reading the terms she realized the apartment was “not the right fit” and that she wouldn't be continuing with the process.

Ghosted

Guess what? They ghosted her. Surprise, surprise! “Run! Don't walk," she says. If you weren't someone who read the fine print before, I hope this TikTok taught you a valuable lesson.
