This man had no problem trying the mystery liquid at the bottom of his barrel, but how safe is it to drink mystery whiskey?
Whiskey is said to be better the older the age. We've all seen the top shelf whiskey at bars or those scenes in movies when someone pulls out a whiskey that's “aged 30” years or they've been saving it for years. The whole point of aging spirits though is to reduce the harsher flavors associated with the raw alcohol. And with spirits like whiskey and bourbon it also helps introducing the woody flavor from the barrel to give it its distinct taste. But when you buy a barrel off of Ebay and then find a mystery liquid of it at the bottom, is it really all that safe to drink it?
TikToker Sean Conway purchased a large wooden barrel from Ebay with the intent of converting it into an ice bath. When he sawed it open he found a mysterious liquid at the bottom. When he gave it a whiff, it smelled very much like whiskey and it is in a wooden barrel, so all signs point to whiskey. So he takes the liquid out, filters it once, and pours it into a glass and has a drink. He says it was very strong, but definitely whiskey.
Many of the viewers are shocked by multiple things going on here. First of all, When Conway first discovers the mysterious liquid, he goes straight in for a dip with the hands and a taste. Straight from the bottom of the barrel to his mouth. That's pretty ballsy to most viewers. Then he only filters it once, which seems like a mistake as well, because you have no idea what is going on with that liquid. Many viewers think he should've filtered it at least a few more times, maybe even 20. And lastly, many people who have worked at distilleries or know a thing or two about the process of making whiskey say that the bottom of the barrel whiskey is simply not good.
“I work at a distillery in Scotland, you couldn’t pay me to drink the bottom of a barrel… if only you knew,” one viewer commented. "the saying"scraping the bottom of the barrel" came from somewhere ..lol. I would not drink it either," another added. Drinking mysterious whiskey is just as safe as drinking any other mysterious liquid you find. One experience whiskey viewer commented that, “if it’s high enough proof, at cask strength it’s 65% - 70% it’ll be fine.”
Even if it is bottom of the barrel whiskey, which makes it not as top shelf as you would think, he still has a lot of it and even cheap whiskey is a good chunk of change.
